Born the son of a poor temple priest in the Muromachi period, Hotei got separated from his mother at an early age, which turned out to be a very painful experience for him. When he grew older, he became a monk and changed his name to Rennyo. In order to help the people suffering from pestilence, war and famine, he went through a strict training to learn the teachings of Shin Buddhism and spread the word across the land.
